10 amazing Linux desktop environments you've probably never seen - Network World

Posted on 10:51 by Unknown
I've been running Fedora and Debian Linux since 2005 and I really only remember perhaps trying out Enlightenment. Gnome 2 Being my Favourite. And KDE being my second favourite. ROX sounds interesting to me too. I do most of my work in Krusader file manager and open all files from there. I seldom use the "File Open" menu in an Application. So, I may try out ROX. Check out the rest on their site link below...

10 amazing Linux desktop environments you've probably never seen

By Bryan Lunduke , May 15, 2013

Enlightenment

Enlightenment is probably the most highly used Desktop Environment in this collection – it's been around quite a long time (it is actually older than GNOME) and is incredibly mature. The current version (E17) is fast – even running quite well on low-end hardware – and is truly gorgeous. Everything about Enlightenment will be instantly recognizable to users of modern computers, except it feels like it was created by some sort of ultra-classy alien race from a star system far, far away.

ROX

ROX is...weird, but wonderful. It brings together the “everything is a file” style of traditional UNIX systems with some concepts from RISC OS. Most current computers try to hide the guts of your file system from you and provide you with a series of launchers (docks, “start buttons”, etc.) and shortcut tools. ROX takes the opposite approach, opting instead to make the file system itself as usable as possible so you can work with your system efficiently directly from the file manager. To this end, ROX uses the “Applications are directories” approach, filing applications (and support files) in a single directory that is then treated as the app itself.

Google is Bringing it all together 15 GB now shared between Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos - Google Drive Blog

Google has combined all of their Free Online File Storage. For a total of 15GB. The changes will be happening this week...

Bringing it all together: 15 GB now shared between Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos

Life gets a bit easier when your Google products work well together—whether that’s inserting a Drive file into an email or sharing a photo from Drive on Google+. As this experience becomes more seamless, separate storage doesn’t make as much sense anymore. So instead of having 10 GB for Gmail and another 5 GB for Drive and Google+ Photos, you’ll now get 15 GB of unified storage for free to use as you like between Drive, Gmail, and Google+ Photos.
With this new combined storage space, you won’t have to worry about how much you’re storing and where. For example, maybe you’re a heavy Gmail user but light on photos, or perhaps you were bumping up against your Drive storage limit but were only using 2 GB in Gmail. Now it doesn’t matter, because you can use your storage the way you want.

How to Video on Lost PLA 3D Printed Part to Aluminium Metal Casting

Posted on 20:55 by Unknown
My second Job, when I was 16 years old. Back in 1973, was... You guessed it! It was in a Foundry. This one, was actually a Machine Shop, with a Foundry in the Back. I Poured Aluminium Lawn Furniture. Little three tiered tables. And I pored some Brass Parts too. I used simple metal moulds. But, there was another guy, who did the Sand Casting and he taught me how to do it well enough to work on my own. For a while, when he was on vacation. Then I went back to my Aluminium Lawn Stuff. I found it very interesting. But, believe me it was hot in that old Sheet Metal Building in these Texas Summers! I didn't stay there, very long. I went back to my fist job, in a regular Machine Shop. But, I have always had in the back of my mind. The things that I could make, if I had my own home Foundry. A couple of years ago. I did a bunch of  research on Home Metal Casting and really got fired up about it;) But, I still haven't done it yet. And also, after reading and watching quite a few videos on 3D Printing Parts at home. One of the first things that came to my mind, was... I wonder if you could do a Lost Plastic Pour? Instead of taking all of that time to hand carve a Wax Pattern or make one from Plaster... Anyway.... All that, to say... This is a very good How To Video on Home Lost PLA 3D Print to Metal Casting. This guy was kind enough to make a Complete. Start to Finish Video for us. He uses some cleaver and inexpensive innovations, along the way. He mentions in the video, towards the end. That he has been doing this for 20 years. And his finished Product, Proves it!:) Also, check out the links below, for more Metal Casting info...

Oh, and yes I have Exploded some Concrete by spilling Molten Aluminium on the Concrete Floor. It was kind of cool, to me at 16. So, I did it again. But, I stopped doing that, when something hot jumped up and hit me in the face. No, I don't remember wearing any of that Protective Equipment. Just some thick leather gloves and my Blue Jeans...

Microsoft Security Advisory (2847140)

Vulnerability in Internet Explorer Could Allow Remote Code Execution

Published: Friday, May 03, 2013 | Updated: Wednesday, May 08, 2013

Version: 1.1

General Information

Executive Summary

Microsoft is investigating public reports of a vulnerability in Internet Explorer 8. Microsoft is aware of attacks that attempt to exploit this vulnerability. Applying the Microsoft Fix it solution, "CVE-2013-1347 MSHTML Shim Workaround," prevents the exploitation of this issue. See the Suggested Actions section of this advisory for more information.

The vulnerability does not affect Internet Explorer 6, Internet Explorer 7, Internet Explorer 9, and Internet Explorer 10.

The vulnerability is a remote code execution vulnerability. The vulnerability exists in the way that Internet Explorer accesses an object in memory that has been deleted or has not been properly allocated. The vulnerability may corrupt memory in a way that could allow an attacker to execute arbitrary code in the context of the current user within Internet Explorer. An attacker could host a specially crafted website that is designed to exploit this vulnerability through Internet Explorer and then convince a user to view the website.

On completion of this investigation, Microsoft will take the appropriate action to protect our customers, which may include providing a solution through our monthly security update release process, or an out-of-cycle security update, depending on customer needs.

We are actively working with partners in our Microsoft Active Protections Program (MAPP) to provide information that they can use to provide broader protections to customers. In addition, we are actively working with partners to monitor the threat landscape and take action against malicious sites that attempt to exploit this vulnerability.

Microsoft continues to encourage customers to follow the guidance in the Microsoft Safety & Security Center of enabling a firewall, applying all software updates, and installing antimalware software.

Microsoft "Fix it" available to mitigate Internet Explorer 8 vulnerability

swiat
8 May 2013 4:13 PM

Today, we are making available a “Microsoft Fix it” solution to block attacks leveraging the Internet Explorer 8 (IE8) vulnerability described in Security Advisory 2847140. This code-signed, easily downloadable and install-able Fix it package uses the Windows application compatibility toolkit to make a small change at runtime to mshtml.dll every time IE is loaded. Here are the links to both apply and uninstall the Fix it solution:

Laptop Screen Back-light converted from CCFL to LED

Posted on 16:33 by Unknown
I wonder if I could do this. I have an IBM Laptop with a bad Screen. Maybe I could Replace the IBM Screen with an Acer Screen, that I have. The Acer wont Power up. So, I'm not sure what it wrong with it. I've tried to power it, with my Bench Top Power Supply, that I built from two PC PSU's. But, I may not be getting the right voltage and amperage. I need a proper Power Supply and connector, to make sure, that the Mother Board is Bad. The Acer is probably not and LED Screen, though. Still, I find this a very interesting article...

Don

LED backlight conversion. By Lee Davison.

Introduction.
I have an Acer laptop that was missing a display and had found all the bits I needed except for the CCFL backlight inverter. I'd thought I had some spares from other dead Acer laptops but it turns out they're all just a little different.
So it looked like I was going to be waiting for the correct inverter to show up until I remembered I have a few smashed LCD panels with LED backlights that I have collected for the LEDs.
How hard can it be to use the LED backlight instead?
LED backlight circuit.
Once the DO NOT TOUCH! tape has been removed from the the back of the LCD it is usually quite easy to identify the LED backlight driver circuit on the PCB.
In this case it is right next to the backlight ribbon connector, seen on the left, and has helpful legends next to usefull test pads such as LED_EN and VLED. It also has the largest inductor and schottky diode on the whole PCB.
Removing the PCB.
To remove the PCB from the smashed LCD the flex PCB connections to the glass need to be removed. These are not fixed very firmly and can usually be pulled from the PCB by hand.
If they won't let go they can just be chopped through with scissors or a knife.
This should free the PCB so it can be removed from the LCD.
Removing the LED strip.
The LED strip is usually secured by more tape, both along the length of the connecting flex PCB and along the display edge, and a couple of screws, one at either end of the strip.
LED driver chip.
I haven't managed to locate the correct datasheet for the LED driver chip, U401, used on this board but this one seems to have the same pinout so I used it as the reference in this case.
If you can't find the exact datasheet for a particular chip you can often find the datasheet for a related chip from the same manufacturer.
Schematic.
The circuit on the board was traced to confirm the punction of the labeled pads. The boost converter part of the circuit looks very much like the circuit in the datasheet.
Preparing the PCB.
Apart from the supply and control inputs a ground connection is also needed. A point on the PCB where ground is exposed or the ground end of a component could have been used but it was just as easy to scrape away a small patch of the solder resist from the ground trace.

MSP430 Touchscreen Piano - Tiano-MSP430 based TouchScreen Piano by Indian Tinker

Here's a nice Project for your TI MSP-430...

    Tiano-MSP430 based TouchScreen Piano

Touchscreens..huh.. They are all around us..Phones ,tablets, phablets and now even laptops. Most of them have a capacitive touchscreen where the change in capacitance at a point is used to sense it and then perform the corresponding action. Capacitive ones are multi point sensing. They sense more than 2 points and hence we get those pinch to zoom features etc.

On the other hand , almost archaic version on touchscreen is the resistive version. That are pretty easy to interface with almost any microcontroller with an ADC. In this project i did over the weekend i tried to interface a touchscreen ( resistive one..) ,available at mobile repair shops in Delhi with a MSP430G2553 (Although MSP430G2231 would also do)  to make a piano.

    Pre-requisites:
