Ninite.com Easy Multiple Open Source App Installer for Windows and Linux

Posted on 20:50 by Unknown

There's a very good Image file Viewer and Editor called XnView, that I tried out today. The XnView App also installs Nero Burning Software, to work with burning files to CD's etc. I found it, when installing a bunch of Software on my Windows 7 System, from the Ninite.com Site. I have two Installer Scripts, that I made with Several Open Source Software Selections, that I made on their Site. You, just select the Software that you want to install and then download the Install Script. Then double click on the ".exe" file (with the install script in it). And the App - Script will run and automatically install all of the Apps in your list. There are also to very good Open Source Software CD ISO's that you can download and burn your own Open Source App
CD, to use Offline. OpenDisc 12.09 with Windows Apps and Valo CD v8 with Windows Apps. Check them out too...

Screenshot Captor - Free Software at DonationCoder.com

Screenshot Captor

Today, I found a Windows Screen Shot App in my Downloads Folder. That I had already downloaded and never installed. I often Download Apps, intending to install them later. But, I seldom use my Windows Systems. I do my Daily Work in Fedora Linux. But, I was doing the thing that I hate most and most often have to do, in Windows. Scanning the System for Viruses and Mal-ware, today. I wanted to Take a Screen Shot of the Results Windows. But, didn't have a Screen Shot App on this System. I knew that I had use several different Screen Shot Apps, in the Past and should have at least on in my Linux Systems, Download Folder. After a search or two, I found Screenshot Captor. So, I figured I must have found it interesting. Since I downloaded it at some point in the recent past. It has an odd install process. It has a notice at the beginning. It tells you, that you can either use the Donation Coder install process or you can unpack the ".exe" file to a folder and run the App from there. Since, I didn't want to mess with reading every word in the Install Process and un-checking all of the Add-on Software and Tool Bar Apps that I figure would be in there... I just un-packed the file to a folder that I made in advance. I used Total Commander to do this and it was very easy, that way. After un-packing the Screenshot Captor App. I found, Screenshotcaptor.exe in the files that I unpacked. I clicked on it and it opened up the app. It has a "Nag" Welcome Screen. That tells you how to get rid of the "Nag Screen".

You don't have to make a decision right now, but for those who do choose to donate now we have a whole bunch of extra special benefits.

I went to the Web Site, but didn't do anything, just yet. I wanted to try out the App first and see if I like it. And I do like it. Screenshot Captor, has so many features, that I had to read through most of the Menu's and the Home Page of their Web Site, tow or three times, before I was was able to successfully take a Screen Shot. It took me a few seconds of hard thinking to realize that their Abbreviations used for the Short Cut Keys stood for the Print Screen Key. Finally! After 21 Years of Computing. I can use that ever present but never working Pt Scr - Sys Req (Print Screen Key) on my Keyboard. I think I was able to use it once, back in about 1999. In DOS, in some App, that I have now idea what it was now... But, cool. That has Nagged me for many years. Why can I just use the Print Screen Key? Anyway... Just hit your "Ctrl-Prt Scr" Key to get a Screen Shot of the Active Window. I have learned from using several different Screen Shot Apps in Linux over the years. That it is easy for me to just set a Screen Shot Delay of 7 to 10 Seconds, before the Screen Shot it taken. That gives me time to get from the Screen Shot App, (when I'm using my Mouse to take the Screen Shot) over to the Window - App that I want to take a Screen shot of. This is especially helpful, when taking a Full Desktop Screen Shot. But, with the Print Screen Shortcut. I can just get in the window that I want to take a Screen Shot of and hit "Ctrl-Prt Scr" and then I still have time to get my Mouse Cursor to where I want it, in case I forgot to already do that. I set Screen Shot Captor to include the Mouse Cursor in the Shot. I tried to use the, Scrolling Screen Shot of an Application that I was running and of Firefox Web Browser. I got nothing in the App and only got the area that was in View in Firefox. So, I will have to do some more reading and try it again, later. But, after a bit of learning. I think I will really like Screenshot Captor for Windows...

Billionaires Dumping Stocks, Economist Knows Why

Wednesday, 05 Jun 2013 07:07 PM

By Newsmax Wires

Despite the 6.5% stock market rally over the last three months, a handful of billionaires are quietly dumping their American stocks . . . and fast.

Warren Buffett, who has been a cheerleader for U.S. stocks for quite some time, is dumping shares at an alarming rate. He recently complained of "disappointing performance" in dyed-in-the-wool American companies like Johnson & Johnson, Procter & Gamble, and Kraft Foods.

In the latest filing for Buffett's holding company Berkshire Hathaway, Buffett has been drastically reducing his exposure to stocks that depend on consumer purchasing habits. Berkshire sold roughly 19 million shares of Johnson & Johnson, and reduced his overall stake in "consumer product stocks" by 21%. Berkshire Hathaway also sold its entire stake in California-based computer parts supplier Intel.

With 70% of the U.S. economy dependent on consumer spending, Buffett's apparent lack of faith in these companies' future prospects is worrisome.

Unfortunately Buffett isn't alone.

Fellow billionaire John Paulson, who made a fortune betting on the subprime mortgage meltdown, is clearing out of U.S. stocks too. During the second quarter of the year, Paulson's hedge fund, Paulson & Co., dumped 14 million shares of JPMorgan Chase. The fund also dumped its entire position in discount retailer Family Dollar and consumer-goods maker Sara Lee.

Finally, billionaire George Soros recently sold nearly all of his bank stocks, including shares of JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Goldman Sachs. Between the three banks, Soros sold more than a million shares.

So why are these billionaires dumping their shares of U.S. companies?

After all, the stock market is still in the midst of its historic rally. Real estate prices have finally leveled off, and for the first time in five years are actually rising in many locations. And the unemployment rate seems to have stabilized.

It's very likely that these professional investors are aware of specific research that points toward a massive market correction, as much as 90%.

One such person publishing this research is Robert Wiedemer, an esteemed economist and author of the New York Times best-selling book Aftershock.

Editor's Note: .

Before you dismiss the possibility of a 90% drop in the stock market as unrealistic, consider Wiedemer's credentials.

In 2006, Wiedemer and a team of economists accurately predicted the collapse of the U.S. housing market, equity markets, and consumer spending that almost sank the United States. They published their research in the book America's Bubble Economy.

Linux Terminal Basics and some Commands - Codecademy

Posted on 12:56 by Unknown
Here's a nice little article about the Linux Terminal Basics and some Commands from Codecademy. Just try to ignore the beginning words, about how they think that everyone is "Afraid" of the Terminal - Command Line". I get to tired of reading this kind of lingo in every article about the Linux Terminal or Command Line. I'm not a bit afraid of the Terminal. I just don't want to waste my time Mucking Around with hard to remember and even harder to type accurately Commands. Not, if i can find a faster way to do what I need to do in a GUI App. And since I started using Linux in 2005. I have found many ways around using the Terminal. But, I do use it. When it is faster to get something done, with a few simple commands. Or if necessary to get something done. When I can find no way to do it easier in the GUI. And I can copy and past some more complicated commands in, from a Web Site or something that I have saved on my Computer. Then, I can do it and I am not afraid. What's there to be afraid of, anyway? The Terminal tells you when you try to do something wrong and asks if you want to do it. But, in many GUI Apps. You can very quickly mess or even break your Linux OS. Without any warning message at all. Just open up GParted and got to work in there. Without knowing what you are doing and see... So, that's my rant for today... Now, here's the info...

Don

Getting Comfortable in the Terminal: Linux

If needed, You can Read the first Steps on the Site. Here are some Basic Terminal Commands...

Step 2: Start an Application

The most basic operation that a user can do from the terminal is start an application. On almost every Linux system, simply using the name of the executable in the /usr/bin directory will start the application. For example, starting the Firefox web browser simply requires typing “firefox” into the command line and pressing enter. You should now see a session of Firefox launch on your desktop. Congratulations! You just executed your first command from the terminal!

Note: Launching an application from the terminal will lock that terminal instance so that you cannot do anything else with it. If you want to be able to use the terminal for other activities, trailing the application executable name with a “&” will put the process in the background of the terminal and you will be able to use the terminal for other things.

Step 3: Get Specific

Launching an application is not all that the terminal can do. You can launch applications and tell the application to edit such and such file (in the case of a text editor, such as Nano, Vim, or Emacs. Nano is the default terminal text editor for most Linux distributions) or you can tell a web browser to launch such and such a web page. For example, the command:

firefox www.codecademy.com

will launch a session of firefox and open the session on the Codecademy home page.

Step 4: Entering Commands

Now that you know how to launch an application, you will also need to know how to traverse the file system straight from the terminal as doing so is a big part of many operations that are done in the terminal.

To start off, enter the command pwd. You should now see something along the lines of

/home/{username}/

The above command stands for Print Working Directory so the directory that you see posted to the terminal is the directory that the terminal is currently in. Now enter the command “ls”. You should now see something along the lines of:

Desktop/ Documents/ Downloads/ Music/ Pictures/ Videos/

And all of the other folders that your home directory contains. The ls command can be thought of as standing for LiSt the contents of the present folder.

A Brief Note on Flags

Before we go any further, you will need to know about flags. Flags are options that are passed to a command that extend the command to accomplish another task at the same time.

Now type the command ls -a (-a meaning all). You should see everything that you saw using the ls command but also you should see a bunch of folders and files that begin with a .. These extra files/folders are “hidden” so as not to clutter up your home directory with files that you may only open once in the life of the computer (if that). As you may have guessed, the difference between a hidden and not hidden file is the beginning dot. The dot tells Linux to hide the folder/file.

Step 5: Change Directories

One last command that you must know to be able to start using the terminal effectively is the cd command. If you type cd by itself, you most likely will go back to your home directory or nothing will happen. This is because the cd command stands for Change Directory.

Because you didn’t pass cd an argument, the terminal has no clue what folder it should enter. The most important cd arguments that you will need to know are {childFolderName}, .., . and ~.

  • {childFolderName} argument tells the terminal to enter the folder in the current directory by the name of {childFolderName}
  • .. tells the terminal to go to the parent folder of the current directory
  • . when used in conjunction with /{folderName} tells the terminal to enter the child folder of the current directory by the name of {folderName}
  • ~ tells the terminal to go back to the home directory (/home/{username}).

Other Useful Commands

Here is a list of other commands that you will probably find useful:

  • mkdir “Makes” a directory in the file system at the specified file path.
  • rm Deletes (“removes”) the file at the specified file path.
  • rmdir Deletes the directory at the specified path.
  • man Opens the MANual pages for the specified command or application. For example, man ls will open the man page that contains all of the information and flag options for the “list” command. This is especially useful to see if a program offers any extra functionality or to figure out how to configure a program.

That's it! Now you're ready to get started in your terminal.

Pidora The Raspberry Pi Fedora Remix - opensource.com

Now, this is a "Raspi" OS that I find very interesting. Fedora, being my favorite Linux Distro... Now, if I could just get a-hold of a Pi...

Pidora: The Raspberry Pi Fedora remix

Raspberry Pi hackers now have a new OS option built by the The Seneca Centre for Development of Open Technology (CDOT). Pidora is a Fedora remix optimized specifically for the Raspberry Pi based on a brand-new build of Fedora for the ARMv6 architecture.

"The Pidora build was performed at Seneca's Centre for Development of Open Technology based on our experience operating the Fedora ARMv5tel/armv7hl build farm over the past three years," said Chris Tyler, Industrial Research Chair at the CDOT.

For those interested in the details of why it's different, the Fedora ARM project has built packages for armv5tel (ARMv5 architecture with the soft-float ABI, which can be used with or without a floating point unit) and armv7hl (ARMv7 architecture with the hard-float ABI, which requires the presence of a floating point unit). Pidora is built with optimizations for the ARMv6 processor and the optional hard-float ABI because the Pi has a hardware floating point unit.

Features

  • Almost all of the Fedora 18 package set available via yum (thousands of packages were built from the official Fedora repository and made available online)
  • Compiled specifically to take advantage of the hardware already built into the Raspberry Pi
  • Graphical first-boot configuration (with additional modules specifically made for the Raspberry Pi)
  • Compact initial image size (for fast downloads) and auto-resize (for maximum storage afterwards)
  • Auto-swap creation available to allow for larger memory usage
  • C, Python, & Perl programming languages available & included in the SD card image
  • Initial release of headless mode can be used with setups lacking a monitor or display
  • IP address information can be read over the speakers and flashed with the LED light
  • For graphical operation, Gedit text editor can be used with plugins (python console, file manager, syntax highlighting) to serve as a mini-graphical IDE
  • For console operation, easy-to-use text editors are included (nled, nano, vi) plus Midnight Commander for file management
  • Includes libraries capable of supporting external hardware such as motors and robotics (via GPIO, I2C, SPI)
