Automakers want to standardize on a Linux-based OS that would make vehicle infotainment systems act more like smartphones

Computerworld - Automakers are working to standardize on a Linux-based operating system for in-vehicle infotainment (IVI) systems that would make it easier for cars to act more like smartphones.

An IVI is the "black box" that powers a car's audio and entertainment systems, as well as hands-free phone service and satellite navigation systems. Most IVIs today have touchscreens and can be voice-activated, but many car buyers pass up those options.

"Today, automakers are having a hard time getting their customers to buy informatics systems because they only can do 10% of what a mobile phone can do," said Rudi Streif, who leads the Automotive Grade Linux workgroup for the Linux Foundation.

The main reason for the limited functionality of most IVIs is that car manufacturers use proprietary software developed by third-party suppliers to power their infotainment systems, meaning car-based apps are also proprietary.

Having an open-source IVI operating system would create a reusable platform consisting of core services, middleware and open application layer interfaces that eliminate the redundant efforts to create separate proprietary systems. By developing an open-source platform, carmakers can share upgrades as they arrive.

Automakers could then focus on differentiating their infotainment systems through their user interfaces, which only make up about 5% to 10% of the software in the IVIs.

"We're leveraging essentially an $11 billion investment already made in Linux by many other companies including IBM and Intel," Streif said. "We can essentially get the platform for free.& from a royalty sense. Of course, we have to spend resources to make it work in our particular platforms."

So far, three automakers have rolled out Linux-based platforms on a limited number of models: GM's Cadillac division uses Linux in its Cue IVI; Tesla offers a 17-in. IVI screen in its Model S all-electric cars; and Toyota recently said that it plans to use a Linux-based IVI in the 2014 Lexus IS.

Tesla's Model S IVI system is designed to allow drivers to navigate using Google Maps with live traffic information, listen to streaming music from any online radio station and have access to an Internet browser for news or restaurant reviews. With Google Maps, Tesla drivers can also locate recharging locations.

Firefox 24 audio not working in YouTube - Well actually it's just Muted

For the last few days, I've noticed that in Firefox 24. The audio is not working on YouTube.com. I have been busy this week. So, I just now looked it up. And it turns out, that the Audio is Working. But, for some Odd Reason... It's Defaulted to being Muted Now. They say they are fixing it. But, as of 10-07-13. You will have to move the tiny slider at the bottom left of the Video to get the Audio to Work in Firefox 24. But, it works perfectly in Google Chrome. Here's the info I found...

Thanks for your patience, all. We have been aware of this issue. It should be resolved soon.

While this issue is live, please try clearing your browser's cache and cookies, or the workaround that rdhuston posted:

The mute will keep coming back for each video you watch, but you can get your sound back each time by pausing the video, right clicking the little X by the speaker symbol and then clicking the speaker symbol itself. Then start the video again. Kind of a pain, but at least you can hear the videos until the problem is fixed.

Oliver 770 Industrial Tractor Project - Video Series, on Rescuing and Restoring an old Oliver 770 Tractor, from a Farm in the Woods

Here's an interesting Video Series, on Rescuing and Restoring an old Oliver 770 Tractor, from a Farm in the Woods. The Oliver 770, has a Front End Loader and a Backhoe. The Tractor had set for quite a while. And the Backhoe was hidden in the Woods, in a different Part of the Farm. The Series is still in Progress, and at video number 133, as of 10-02-13. I found the story to be completely addicting. I started with video 1 and I didn't stop until video number 13, on my first viewing. This is not a Professionally done video. It's just a guy, documenting his experience. But, if you like fixing up old Machines and working on Motors. Then you may really like this Series. Electric Zero Turn Mower and more Mower Mods

Here's an interesting Mower Conversion. They have taken a Club Cadet Zero Turn Gas Mower and Converted it to an Electric Powered Mower. With Solar Charging, as well. This was not a Cheap Build and he compares the Costs. Gas vs Electric Conversion, for us. The Video was a little confusing to me at first. It starts out. With Starting the Mower, as the Gas Powered Version. I'm judging this, by the Sound I hear. Then, it cuts to the Mower Running on Electric Power. The Blades are Loud When Spinning. So, It's actually hard to tell the difference, between the sound of a Gas Club Cadet and an Electric Version, by listening to the Sounds on the Video. Actually, for a minute there. I thought... This is a Fraud! But, After watching and listening a couple of times. I figured out, that it's just an unexplained Switch, in the Video. I think... Anyway... There are some really interesting Conversion Pics and Videos on the site (links below). Though the Details of the Builds are not on the site. As far as I can tell. They seem to be on On his Reddit thread, according to the HackaDay Article (where I found the info). Check em out below...

The economics of electric mower operation

Let’s break down the cost of operation for an electric mower vs. the gas counterpart.

From some quick googling it seems the cub cadet zero turn uses 1.8 gallons of fuel per hour. Let’s round this down to 1.5GPH. Fuel cost in this area is $3.50/gallon, so

1.5GPH x $3.50 = $5.25/hour

Our electrified zero turn mows for approximately 1 hour on a 4KWH battery pack. The electricity price in this area is $.13/KWH, so

4KWH x $.13 = $.52/hour

But the electric zero turn costs more upfront than the gas version. The total part cost breakdown is as follows

3x Enerdel ME330-049 Energy @$480/ea = $1460

ME-1004 Double brush 48v motor = $525

Soliton Jr. Motor controller = $1750

PMP-450 pump, radiator, tubing = $250

——-Grand total——- $3985 dollars

So the operational cost difference is $5.25 – $.52 = $4.73/hour

And the payback time for the conversion based purely on fuel cost savings is…..

$3985 / $4.73 = 842.49 hours of operation

Electrified Yard Equipment Hauls Grass

[AmpEater] spent the summer converting yard equipment from internal combustion to electric power. The conversions run from a relatively tame Wheel Horse, to an insane Cub Cadet. The Wheel Horse lost its Kohler engine in favor of a hydraulic pump motor from a crown forklift. 48 volt power is supplied by MK lead acid gel cells. An Alltrax 300 amp controller keeps this horse reigned in.

On his Reddit thread, [AmpEater] says he is especially proud of his Cub Cadet zero turn ride on mower. For those who aren’t up on lawn implement terminology, a “zero turn” means a mower with zero turning radius. Zero turn mowers use two large wheels and tank style steering to turn within their own radius. We bet this style mower would also make a pretty good robot conversion, however [AmpEater’s] zero turn is still setup for cutting the grass.

When people were able to access the Marketplaces, there was detailed information about the premiums for insurance products. One of the keys to whether the Marketplaces will work is if there is affordable coverage.

William Custer, director of the Center for Health Services Research at Georgia State University, said the premiums he has seen from Marketplaces across the country look “really affordable and are equal or less than what many people are paying now” for insurance on the individual market.

Federal tax credits to pay for premiums are a big part of that. For example, Custer said a person under 30 who is making $24,000 a year will receive about $200 a month in federal subsidies to pay for coverage.

Still, the price for insurance for many young people may be more than they are willing to pay. Custer said policies for those under 30 who are healthy are about 10% to 15% more expensive than what they can buy in individual insurance markets currently, but they will receive more benefits than are offered in most policies.

Holtz-Eakin thinks those higher prices will be a problem for getting healthy people to buy insurance. “The prices are bad news for the young and healthy,” he said.
